Furikake Popcorn

Take your popcorn game to the next level with Furikake Popcorn!

Furikake—a flavorful Japanese seasoning made with nori (dried seaweed), sesame seeds, sugar, and salt—was originally meant for rice, but trust us, it’s a perfect match for hot, buttery popcorn.

The result? A sweet, salty, umami-packed snack that’s impossible to resist.

Want to make this treat even better? Look for furikake made with seaweed from Maine’s incredible seaweed farms—supporting sustainable blue foods while you snack!

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Serves: 4-6

Ingredients:

For the Nori Komi Furikake:

  • 2 nori sheets

  • 3 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

  • 3 tablespoons toasted black sesame seeds

  • ½ teaspoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

For the Popcorn:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

  • ½ cup popcorn kernels

Method:

  1. Furikake: Using sharp scissors or kitchen shears, cut nori sheets into small, thin pieces. Place into a small bowl along with both sesame seeds, sugar, and salt. Mix well and set aside.

  2. Popcorn: In a medium pot over medium heat, add butter and oil and heat until butter is melted. Add two kernels, cover the pot, and wait until you hear them pop—then you’ll know the pot is preheated.

Turn off the heat, add the remaining kernels, shake the pot to evenly distribute the kernels and turn the heat back to medium. Once the kernels begin to pop, shake again. When the popping slows down to 1 every few seconds, remove from the heat.

  3. Assembly: Place hot popcorn into a serving bowl and toss in a few tablespoons of furikake. Serve immediately.
